At the time of the test, I had Maxis Crossmark tires on 29er x 2.1" folding bead. The Crossmark is a fast-rolling cross country tire with very low-profile knobs and a center knob-pattern - that makes them even faster on the road. Ideally, this is a tire for hard, dry-packed terrain... but that's about it. Definitely not an "all-mountain" or downhill tread pattern. Throw a little mud at them and they'll slip like a banana. A little loose gravel, same problem. If your trails are nice and packed, without too many washed-out, puddled or sandy sections, this is a fast (and very fun) tire to ride. It doesn't "feel" like most heavy 29er rubber, but I suppose that's the trade-off for the traction that it sacrifices.

This is a great review. I have a 2008 Gary Fisher Rig frame that I plan to build up and I have been going back and forth on what to do about a wheelset, but after reading your review on the TN 719s I think I'll give them a try!

Carl Martenss last blog post..<a href="http://carlhmartens.com/grv-sports-agency/" rel="nofollow">GRV Sports Agency</a>
